A Bunch of Barton Links

I thought I'd compile a number of recent current David Barton links into one post as opposed to a series of posts with links. First Barton was on the Daily Show again. Here Ed Brayton complains Stewart was too easy on him. Ed had a follow up post which links to this post of John Fea's on the matter. Here is Charles Johnson's post which links to Chris Rodda's Huffington Post article entitled Pseudo-Historian David Barton's New Jefferson Book is a Load of Crap -- and a Bestseller. Finally don't miss historian Martin Marty's take down of Barton (hat tip John Fea).

Eminent scholar Martin E. Marty writes:

"Yet the most ardent public and pop advocate of privilege and virtual establishment, David Barton..."

Is that true? Does Barton advocate the privileging of Christianity? "Virtual" establishment? I'm unaware of this.

Marty also writes of the "Jefferson Bible":

"Had the Indians been converted with that text, their heirs would have had no place to go but to what became the humanist wing of the Unitarian-Universalist church."

Not exactly so, since the 1804 version to which Barton refers contains the Last Judgment [Matthew 25:31-46], "When the Son of Man shall come in His glory." It is Jesus who judges mankind, separating "sheep from the goats."

Many of Marty's other criticisms of Barton are perfectly valid, but even the experts are partially wrong here. I'm not impressed.

We need more analysis of the implications of TJ believing what was left in his Bible after he cut it up.

Actually, Marty is speaking explicitly of the text, leaving no weasel room here.
