I was rereading this classic by Drs. Noll, Hatch and Marsden. And this passage from pages 150-51 struck me as especially relevant.
The book is remarkable in how it got three extremely important authorities together to write such. It wasn't just Mark Noll, who is a legend in his own right, but also Nathan O. Hatch and George Marsden.
Dr. Hatch is, if I'm not mistaken, the high paid college President in America, currently.
The book is strongly recommended.

That is their opinion. They are entitled to it, but their values are no more valid or worthy than any non-historians'. Yes, those times had slavery [and of course they predictably remind us of that fact], but it was restricted to the south, and many Christians today believe that the normalization of such previously abhorred practices like abortion, homosexuality, blasphemy and soon euthanasia is indeed an unacceptable price of "progress."
What they write here is not history as such, it is moralizing. Many Christians do not share their morals or their cosmopolitan "tolerance" of what many consider to be immorality.
I have had my complaints with Mark Noll before for what I consider his moralizing under the guise of scholarship.
