I tend to feel old when I see the new trend of "private history" replace the old focus on the public acts of political figures. I agree with David Post about Jefferson's private affairs in his final sentence: "But to claim that that has something to do with Jefferson’s historical legacy is truly preposterous."
Perhaps this is why I could never get through Paul Johnson's "Intellectuals." Who cares about Rousseau parenting or Marx's treatment of his maid? It strikes me as ad hominem.
