I did a little work on Unitarian Wm Howard Taft awhile back.
IIRC, in the 1912 election, he explicitly called America a "Christian nation," and won the Catholic vote by pandering to sentiments on the side of the Catholic Philippines.
[Perhaps it was 1916, when Bull Moose TeddyR split the GOP vote and let Wilson in, but the particulars above per "Christian nation" I think are correct.]
[The GOP having worse luck courting the Jewish vote these days with stronger support of Israel, but the electoral strategy holds.]
