"Is America a Christian Nation?"
A June 2008 sermon by Lon Solomon, Senior Pastor, McLean Bible Church (McLean, VA)
Being a pastor myself, I thought I'd start a periodic series of posts here at American Creation, which I'll call "From the Pulpit." These will be sermons (either video, audio, or transcript) preached from America's pulpits today concerning America's origins.
While I do not necessarily endorse all of the views expressed in all the sermons I'll be posting, I'll be picking sermons with which I'm in GENERAL agreement and which I feel will provoke some good discussion.
Our first message in this series then is...
"Is America a Christian Nation?" by Rev. Lon Solomon
This message, preached by the pastor of the largest evangelical church in the Washington, DC area, argues that the United States is NOT a "Christian nation" but that it was fundamentally shaped by Christian leaders and principles. Lon Solomon doesn't spend all his time on the past, however. He argues that Christian principles should be brought to bear in the public square today.
I warn you that Pastor Solomon doesn't exactly avoid controversy. He gets into abortion, gay rights, education, etc. I'm sure it will spark some discussion. But, that's a good thing. I appreciate it when a pastor speaks boldly.

Solomon sez something like this, "If A, then B; if B then C; if C, then Christians must take over America."

Every constituency and/or interest group and/or "faction" worth its salt strives to "take over" America or at least aspects of America. Christians are no different, nor should they be. Evangelical Christians have as much right to organize and get into the public policy sandbox as any other group.

That's probably right, Brian.

But.
.
America was (it seems to me) founded on the principles of true Liberalism which is that government is formed to protect the equal rights of all legitimate citizens; whereas, Christianity operates on the basis of some revealed truth.

Somewhere, in there, we come to the idea of rationalism either political or revealed.

And, that is where the present arguments seem to be located.

Most Important and not only to you, Brian; but, to everyone who frequents this blog site either as a contributor or an observer, your comment, Every constituency and/or interest group and/or "faction" worth its salt strives to "take over" America or at least aspects of America, puts the focus on the central point of what America is all about.

And, so, here is the question worded in a slightly different way, "Was America founded to protect the revelations of Christianity or was it founded to protect the rights of the individual citizen?
