I've always been a big fan of Noll. I think he is one of the premiere historians on religion in America. As opposed to people like Barton and Lillback, Noll's work is respected for its authenticity and insight.

By the way, re Lillback I wouldn't rank him as high as Noll. But I also wouldn't rank him as low as Barton. His GW book is a bit "Johnny Cochranish" in its argumentation but he tries to play by the rules of scholarly documentation better than Barton does.
I agree with Jon. Lillback does deserve much more credit than Barton. Despite my problems with his book on GW, there was still a lot of good stuff that I really enjoyed.
As for Noll, my favorite of his books is "The Rise of Evangelicalism: The Age of Edwards, Whitefield, and the Wesleys." An EXCELLENT book.
