Although he seems to have moderated his deist beliefs, the change of method he is referring to here is more a change of tactic than a change of belief.

Is the Shaftesbury he is referring to here the 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury? If so, I don't think he was a deist but he did seem to have some heterodox beliefs.Danielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12165084874363214919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237087217187172116.post-82026925033473676872018-09-22T00:48:54.415-06:002018-09-22T00:48:54.415-06:00It's debatable that Franklin was even moderate...It's debatable that Franklin was even moderately successful debunking Christian doctrine or Calvinism for that matter. I don't recall he ever answered Calvin or Edwards regarding church/state issues, nor did his philosophy make the nation more righteous or cohesive. Rather, the early 19th century gave rise to an increase of competition to historic Christian doctrine. In fact, had Patrick Henry remained in the VA legislature, his assessment bill would have passed, as in the majority of states, thereby changing American history.
