I would agree with Tom that it is important label things correctly and show the difference between Calvin and later Reformed theologians.

I think it is especially telling how many of Whitherspoon's disciples ended up in key positions. I think his political theory/theology needs to be explored more on these pages for sure. Hopefully, this essay will do that.

I read Dreisbach's book on the wall of seperation. It was well done and put things in a much different light than many secularists would want.

While I do not agree with the blow back in Texas in that it is partisan, at times illogical, and goes too far, it is a good start at attempting to get this founding thing right. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and some balance can be restored there.King of Irelandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11793825722325763371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237087217187172116.post-85449065301822956642010-06-29T09:59:36.951-06:002010-06-29T09:59:36.951-06:00Many thanks again for sharing.

But currently I will post section by section, one section a day, in order and see how it feels.

Who knows, it may work in 12 parts.Jonathan Rowehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04079637406589278386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237087217187172116.post-87822783020928606652010-06-29T09:55:01.262-06:002010-06-29T09:55:01.262-06:00Tom,

I welcome any feedback, positive or negative.

I should perhaps note that the essay is c. 52 pages long, so I'm not sure how much should be posted on a blog (even in sections). If anyone would like the full essay, please email me at mhall@georgefox.edu.

Thanks!Mark David Hallnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237087217187172116.post-60981377679853724042010-06-28T22:49:51.071-06:002010-06-28T22:49:51.071-06:00Dr. Hall previously wrote to Jonathan Rowe about t...Dr. Hall previously wrote to Jonathan Rowe about this:

Jon, in the next several weeks I will finish a good draft of a paper I will deliver at APSA on the influence of Reformed political thought on the American founding. I wonder if I might "test drive" some of it on American Creation?

Well, this is it, and Dr. Hall is a welcome addition to our mainpage.

I don't know what Dr. Hall means by a "test drive." Just to see it in cyberprint?

Would he like the "Barton Treatment," the "Rodda Treatment?"

Mark, that's mostly an inside joke. But I honestly don't know what level of input you're asking for.

The first thing I must say is that even for your fellow history scholars, you immediately need to make a distinction between "Calvinism"---which even to historians means Jean Calvin and Calvin only, whose Institutes of the Christian Religion is no less a dogmatic and inflexible system than Roman Catholicism---papism---and his successors' {Beza, Peter Martyr, and other Calvinists in good standing like Mornay, Goodman, Rutherford].

"Calvinism" makes secularists puke at the mention of his name [see Jefferson]; you're DOA. Might as well say "Catholic." Pope.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH! They run screaming from your lecture!!!! Wait, wait, come back!!!!

"Reformed Theology" is such a stately term. "Thomism" isn't bad either. "Aquinas" in a pinch. Learn your audience's hot buttons, and stay away from them accordingly.

"Reformed Theology" sounds quite reasonable...Tom Van Dykehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07121072404143877596noreply@blogger.com
